Confessions of an usability heretic

Be they religious, ideological, whatever. I find that fundamentalist thought leads to extremely poor and narrow descriptions of reality. It seeks to remove diversity and difference, to cancel complexity, to unravel the intricate tapestries of activity and existence into same colour threads. It has a habit of freezing in time moments of knowledge, the meaning and belief we instil in actions. It wants to render acts and ideas univocal, to tattoo them in time. It aims at simplicity, and yet it does not simplify but renders simplistic our interaction with the environment, in all its aspects. Which is all well and good, or perhaps

Confessions are people's way of coming clean, sharing unethical acts with others. Although confessions are traditionally viewed as categorical-one either comes clean or not-people often confess to only part of their transgression. Such partial confessions may seem attractive, because they offer an opportunity to relieve one's guilt without having to own up to the full consequences of the transg...
Augustine’s Confessions: Symbolism in Autobiography
Some scholars have criticized Augustine’s Confessions for lacking structure. In this paper scenes from Augustine’s life depicted in Confessions are analyzed allegorically in order to better understand what his intention may have been as an author. Augustine was a talented writer and it is worth considering that he was aware that Confessions may have had less impact had it been written in a more...

In their study, Kassin and Kiechel (1996) falsely accused students of causing a computer crash and found that 69% of them were willing to sign a false confession, 28% internalized guilt, and 9% confabulated details to support their false beliefs. The authors interpreted these results to mean that false confessions can be easily elicited. However, in their study, false confessions were explicitl...

There has been an increasing concern about inactive drivers who would easily lead to road accidents and fatalities once return to driving. This study investigated the re-usability of traffic signs for inactive drivers with consideration of driver factors and cognitive sign features. Fifty-seven Hong Kong Chinese, who possessed a full driving license but had not driven for an extended period, co...
Why confessions trump innocence.
As illustrated by the story of Amanda Knox and many others wrongfully convicted, false confessions often trump factual innocence. Focusing on consequences, recent research suggests that confessions are powerfully persuasive as a matter of logic and common sense; that many false confessions contain richly detailed narratives and accurate crime facts that appear to betray guilty knowledge; and th...
